Event Details

We cannot protect something we do not love, we cannot love what we do not know, and we cannot know what we do not see. Or hear. Or sense.
-Richard Louv

The SEED story workshop is designed to gently encourage awareness and empathy with the natural world through experiential and material based learning. Using storytelling children will examine ideas about the natural world, observing it through a creative lens. Exhibiting artist Rachel Doolin will introduce children to her artwork in New Era, currently on show at Solstice. Using a range of materials and a variety of creative thinking exercises, children will then have the opportunity to explore and creatively illustrate their own stories based on the theme ‘An Encounter with Nature’. Encouraged to create individual accordion style journals or sketchbooks in which to illustrate their ideas, this workshop involves techniques such as drawing, collage, mark making, words, narrative and poetry through the process of making.

This is a classroom-based workshop adhering to schools COVID policies and procedures. For booking information please contact deirdre.rogers@solsticeartscentre.ie.

Fee: €3 per student

Rachel Doolin is a multi-disciplinary artist, educator and environmental activist based in Cork. Having completed a research trip and residency to Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a secured storage facility between Norway and the North Pole in the Arctic Ocean, Doolin is currently working on a project entitled ‘Seed Cloud’ which explores the concept of seeds as archives of cultural memory.
